History of the UK French Spaniel
The French Spaniel (Épagneul Français) is a hunting breed developed in France and Canada, with lineage tracing back to the 14th century. Although popular among royalty during the Middle Ages, the breed nearly faced extinction by the turn of the 20th century. It was ultimately preserved through the dedicated efforts of Father Fournier, a French priest.
The first dedicated attempt to bring the French Spaniel breed to the UK began in 2013 and followed with five UK first generation litters under the kennel name De Landesvoie. The second UK Generation litters began in 2019 and the third generation from 2020.
The French Spaniel is recognised by many countries by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), through the Société Centrale Canine (SCC) in France as the country of origin and the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and they are also Foundation Stock in USA.
As of 1st October 2026 The Epagneul Français has become recognised by the Royal Kennel Club. We will be classified in the Gundog Group on the Imported Breed Register.
